The East in West Vinyl Archive and DUNYA continued their collaboration with SUNO, a workshop on sampling culture at Handsworth Library.
We invited people of all ages and backgrounds to join us in exploring the influences of 20th and 21st-century South Asian music and engaging in a conversation on the art of sampling. Is sampling a bridge that connects generations of the South Asian diaspora, or is it an extractive technique that fails to appreciate cultural heritage?
Raveena and Amrit took the audience on a journey from pre-partition to modern day South Asia, and the socio-political contexts in which South Asian people around the world were making music. We delved into Brummie and specifically the Handsworth music scene, the influence and practice of artists like Punjabi MC and Bally Sagoo, and what it is about our identity as ‘Brummies’ that changes the way we listen to and make music.
The audience shared their own experiences making music, the challenges they faced in the industry, sampling culture within their communities, and the expense of vinyl in the UK.
We can’t wait to work with DUNYA and Handsworth Library in the future!
